With Mardi Gras just around the corner, it can be both an exciting and nerve-wracking time. While many daters feel inspired and empowered to explore their queerness, others may feel hesitant or unsure about taking that step.

In the year of ECSTATICA, we want to make sure that daters head into the festival of connection, joy, and powerful, collective movement in a way that feels comfortable and approachable.

the statistics don’t tell fibs

This comes as a third of LGBTQIA+ and heterosexual Hinge daters have considered dating someone outside of their usual gender preference, but more than half didn’t act on those feelings. When asked why:

  • 34% hesitated due to unfamiliarity with queer dating
  • 25% feared rejection

One of the reasons for this is the Type Cycle – described by Moe Ari Brown (they/he), Hinge’s Love & Connection Expert, as “the tendency to rigidly adhere to dating preferences based on past preferences.” We’re all guilty of sticking to what we know – but it can be hard to turn that attraction into action.
