In 1948, Dr. Alfred Kinsey and his team published a book titled Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. The scale introduced there was later expanded in Sexual Behavior in the Human Female in 1953.

The Kinsey Scale was developed based on empirical research, using extensive data gathered through structured interviews. Kinsey and his colleagues at Indiana University’s Institute for Sex Research conducted interviews with over 5,000 men. Later, they interviewed more than 5,900 women about their sexual behaviors and experiences. This was a significant dataset for the 1940s and 1950s.
The Kinsey Scale ranges from 0 to 6. A score of 0 indicates exclusively heterosexual. A score of 6 indicates exclusively homosexual. The numbers in between represent varying degrees of bisexuality. It demonstrated that sexual orientation exists on a spectrum rather than as a strict binary of gay or straight.
Although Kinsey’s research was scientifically supported and included observational and statistical techniques, the American Psychiatric Association acted differently. In April 1952, it classified homosexuality in the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It labeled it as a ‘sociopathic personality disturbance’.
Shortly after the manual’s publication, many professionals in medicine, mental health, and social sciences criticized this classification. They were concerned about the absence of empirical and scientific evidence. TWO DECADES later (in 1973), this outdated and unscientific classification was overturned.
