NEW BOOK BY ELSKA SHOWCASES THE GAY MEN OF ROME
‘Elska Rome’ is the fifty-fourth book in the Elska series. It is a project about getting to know diverse LGBTQ+ communities around the world. The book is out now. This latest issue showcases a variety of ordinary local men from the Italian capital. It does this through a blend of intimate photography and personal storytelling.
“Ever since the Elska project began, people have been asking us to make an issue in Italy. Finally, after ten years, we’ve done it,” says Elska editor, writer and chief photographer Liam Campbell. “Yet, it turned out to be a surprisingly difficult issue to make. We faced a challenge to persuade local men to take part. This was true more than in almost any other place we’ve visited. As of now, this list includes fifty-four different cities. Maybe it’s the looming shadow of the Vatican that casts an air of conservatism. It’s something else entirely. Regardless, the fact that I managed to interview and photograph one person, let alone nine, felt like something.
