Who joins LGBTQ+ party wings

and what is it like to be part of them?

Across Australia (and beyond), LGBTQ+ people are increasingly joining political parties, and many are getting involved in LGBTQ+ party wings like Liberal Pride, Rainbow Labor, and Queer Greens.

These groups bring together members who share an interest in LGBTQ+ issues and provide spaces for connection, discussion, and political engagement within parties. But despite their growing presence, we still know very little about LGBTQ+ party wings and the experiences of the people involved in them. A new international research project is aiming to change that.

Led by researchers from Griffith University (Australia), Uppsala University (Sweden), and the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), the project focuses on LGBTQ+ wings within political parties.

Using an online survey, the project investigates:

  • How and why people join LGBTQ+ party wings
  • What kinds of activities members take part in
  • Members’ experiences within the wing and the broader party
  • Views on LGBTQ+ issues and political participation

The aim is to build a clearer picture of these organisations and their role within contemporary party politics.

A global project

The study is being conducted across LGBTQ+ wings in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the UK. This allows researchers to compare experiences across different countries and political contexts.

Who can take part?

You must be a current member of any of the following LGBTQ+ wings:

  • Liberal Pride
  • Rainbow Labor
  • Queer / Rainbow Greens

Anonymous and confidential

  • No names or identifying information are collected
  • Researchers do not have access to membership lists
  • All results are reported in aggregate only (i.e. collectively by country and party ideology)

Take the survey here!

It takes around 10-12 minutes to complete.

By taking part, you’ll be contributing to research that aims to support more inclusive and equal political parties. Thank you!
