“When I lived at 22 The Esplanade, the apartment entrance had heavily florid carpets and dado railings. My ostentatious, art deco bathroom featured a large pink bath with cement canopy and barley twist columns. One Sunday afternoon of partying, a few of us were romping and frolicking, naked on the rubber waterbed in the spare room. Aunty Trixie – an older queen – didn’t want to play along. Instead, she went to the kitchen cupboards, returned dribbling olive oil over us. Further she poured yoghurt taken from my fridge. Unrelenting, a whole box of corn flakes was scattered over us. In a chaotic mess, we all decamped, hilarious, to that big pink cleansing bath.” – LOCHLAN
An extract from St Kilda artist, Pamela Reid’s, book, “Prisms of Time”. Her quirky illustrations of architecture in our changing urban landscape, resonated with locals. Reminiscences of partying, the fun times, the good and the naughty were offered as stories of social history evolved.
I was very fortunate to be at the Book Launch and received a signed copy from Pamela. It was most unexpected and very generous. The use of the word quirky would not, in my opinion, be insulting at all. The book is a marvellous memory of an era well passed, but never forgotten. The style of combining pictures/images and words reminds me of Hayhoe Pix Gallery (clear self promotion ooops). I highly recommend Prisms of Time to lovers of both the written word and superb art. You seriously will not regret the decision to buy it, Brett Hayhoe.
