Important tips for great LGBTQ travel

Going on a trip abroad is the highlight of the year for most of us. Yet, when it comes to LGBTQ+ travelers, it may seem like a daunting perspective. Fortunately for you, for the most part, the LGBT journey is perfectly secure.

However, we are still at a time when gays usually act more cautiously than their heterosexual counterparts. With this in mind, here you have a list of security tips for LGBT travelers. With the help of this article, you can expect a fun, but above all, safe travel experience.

1. Get To Know Local Laws

The most crucial step before traveling is investigating local laws and policies concerning the LGBT+ community. While there are many gay-friendly destinations around the world, this is not universal. It is essential to know if your status of sexuality is legal or not. Maybe it is forbidden in the country that you want to visit. This is not uncommon.

However, some laws relating to the LGBT community are incredibly complex. Some apply only to gay men, some do not protect the LGBT community from discrimination, and others do not recognize transgender people. Often, these laws apply only to nationals, not tourists. But you will still have to take precautions when you are in public spaces.

2. Get To Know The Local Social Opinions

An equally important step to plan your trip is to understand the social views of LGBTQ. Because even in some countries where these relations are legal, it is still taboo in the community. An excellent example of this is in India. Back in 2018, the Supreme Court forbid homosexuality in India. India remains a very conservative country. You will surely attract a lot of attention if you display affection in public.

On the other hand, it is not unusual to see two men holding hands in India as brothers or friends.

3. Investigate The Local Gay Scene

You will be surprised by places where you can find a thriving gay scene. It’s comforting to know that there is a place where you can go and be in the company of others like you. However, you should be warned that doing it in a country with anti-gay policies is potentially dangerous.

The local police can often invade LGBT+ clubs and bars to imprison those in them. It is not exactly common, so it is good to be conscious about it.

4. Research On The Local Social Label

Regardless of your sexual orientation, it is important to educate yourselves and respect local cultures. For example, in some countries, women must cover some parts of their bodies at all times.

And in many Asian countries, it is forbidden to show any kind of public exhibition of affection, even if you are a heterosexual couple. Appreciating the rich diversity in cultures around the world will often need some adaptation.

5. Don’t Do Anything Unnecessary In Public Spaces

You never know who could be listening. If you are in an anti-LGBTQ country, you need to be very cautious when revealing your sexuality to anyone you do not know. There have been cases of trapping and kidnapping. The consequences can be anything, from a fine to life in prison. Even though this is not always the case, you need to be mindful of your environment.
